The
sixties: That golden
age, when the sun always shone, it never rained, and the summers lasted
forever. The sixties started quietly enough, it was virtually a seamless
transition from the previous decade. Rock'n'roll had been tamed and
sanitized, in fact, it had become so emasculated that it was barely
surviving.
Initially the status quo prevailed. Collectively, teenagers were still mostly demur, and subservient. Adults supervised youth clubs, and almost every other activity. There was of course, the coffee bar (a legacy from the fifties), the cinema, and depending upon where you lived, the Friday and Saturday night dances, but it was all very innocuous and innocent. The 'Cold War' preoccupied politicians, and sometimes the the temperature of the cold war was raised a little by incidents like the Cuba missile crisis and the shooting down of an American U2 spy plane. None of this was of much concern to us though. We had preoccupation's of our own.
Popular music was eventually
revitalized by the Twist, and by 1962 The Beatles had rescued Rock'n'roll.
From then on things
happened with an ever increasing momentum: Radio Caroline, The mods,
discotheques. The old order, and all that it stood for, was suddenly
under siege. The world had changed for ever, and although we did not
know it then, we were the first young generation that had the power
and influence of money.
The sixties were in
many respects also very turbulent times. War in Vietnam, and war between
the Arab nations and Israel. There was student unrest and tragedies
like the Aberfan disaster. Despite these dark events the sixties was
great time to be young, and I am so glad that I was part of it.
It has been said of the sixties that if you can remember it
then you were never there. Well, I remember that time with
great clarity and it is to the sixties, and to all of the
people that I knew back then that this website is dedicated
